Project description

The problem of providing high-quality drinking water and a lack of integrated environmental management are relevant is-sues in the Shatsk project’s area. The SVITYAZ project is a chance to tackle these problems. The overall objective of the project is to prevent the spread of human and animal diseases in Volyn Oblast (Ukraine) and Lubelskie Voivodeship (Poland). The cross-border approach is aimed at combining efforts of beneficiaries to improve the sanitary and epidemiological situation of the biosphere reserve “Western Polissia”.

The SVITYAZ project will do so by building the sewage system in rural settlements around Lake Svityaz. Thanks to the development of sewer networks and sewage treatment plants in the settlements flow of polluted sewage to subsoil waters will decrease by 80%, which will reduce the pollution of Shatsk National Natural Park lakes and basins of the Western Bug and Prypiat.

The target groups of the SVITYAZ project are residents, visitors of health resorts, patients of sanatoriums of the Shatsk Raion (the buildings of which will be connected to the newly-built sewer system), participants of the events organized to support the development of health protection and social services (approximately 7500 persons). The final beneficiaries of the project are the inhabitants of the cross-border region, visitors of recreational objects of the Shatsk Raion and of the other nature protection territories of the Polish-Ukrainian-Belarusian border areas (approximately 500 000 persons).
