Project description

Two libraries: from Hajnówka in Poland and Slonim in Belarus are involved in the promotion and protection of local cultural heritage, including art and literature. Both towns have many prominent figures who have gone down in history over the years as eminent creators and authors, and their achievements deserve the name of cultural heritage, which should be supported, promoted and disseminated. Municipal Public Library of dr. Tadeusz Rakowiecki in Hajnówka has seventy years of experience in saving the legacy of local artists and writers from oblivion by organizing readings, literary meetings and competitions, painting,  sculptures and photography exhibitions. The Polish library will share its knowledge with the librarians of the Jakub Kolas District Library in Slonim, by implementing the joint activities as a part of the RespectHeritage project.

The cooperation includes, among others, study visits, seminars, educational meetings, exhibitions and purchase of electronic equipment for both partners. The beneficiaries will prepare and publish their own promotional publications: the travel guide “Literary Slonim” in Belarus and the album “Portraits of Hajnowians” in Poland, which will help to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the Belarusian-Polish regions. Additionally, it is planned to modernize the Belarusian Book Museum at the Jakub Kolas District Library and to create a Literature Trail in Slonim and the surrounding area, marked out with the places of residence or birth of local writers.

Establishing cooperation between librarians from Hajnówka and Slonim will allow to strengthen and develop cross-border contacts between communities on the Polish-Belarusian border. Thanks to joint activities, the cultural heritage of both cross-border towns, especially the literary ones, will become more attractive and popular. The products of the project are to show the regions of cooperating institutions as places attractive for tourists and to popularize the peculiarities of their local culture and history.
