Partners from Poland and Belarus come together to promote an underestimated tourist attraction, the 19th hydraulic engineering work – the Augustów Canal, unique on a European scale. It is expected that the Canal will be a flagship site of the cultural heritage of the Polish-Belarusian borderland. Currently, there is no common promotion policy and a coherent vision for enhancing cross-border tourism along the waterway, which hinders its potential of tourism development and attracting investments to the region.
The major element of the ArtVector project is rebranding and repositioning the image of the Augustów Canal so that it can be considered a cross-border culture and tourism destination. The elaboration of tourist materials in foreign languages (maps, leaflets, a guidebook on cross-border sites) will contribute to the wide promotion of the Canal. Another project initiative involves the organization of four cultural events under the logo: “Augustów Canal – the vector of Heritage and Tradition”. Additionally, five video lectures will be created and carried out by instructors experienced in the field of folklore and ethnography. The project partners will conduct workshops on traditional crafts techniques, patterns and the reconstruction of old rituals such as “Maslenitsa”, “Kupalye” and “Kalyadnyie Zabavy”. However, the most interesting point of the project is the preparation and publication of a joint online directory of cultural and entertainment events along the Augustów Canal, containing information about all cultural events carried out in the area, which allow potential tourists to find interesting activities and take part in them.
Through the ArtVector project, the Augustów Canal will receive a new life and will be connected with tourist movement service. Its locations will be the places where cultural, entertainment and spectacular events will take place. The project will facilitate the sustainable, cultural development of the region and will ensure public interest to the joint cultural sites.
