During the implementation of one of the PBU Large Infrastructure Projects, an unique historical discovery was made. It occurred during the reconstruction of the voivodeship road No. 885 Przemyśl – Hermanowice – State Border leading to the planned border crossing Malhowice (Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland) – Nyzhankovychi (Lviv Oblast, Ukraine). As part of the pre-investment archaeological work in Malhowice, a settlement, probably dating back to the late Roman period, was discovered!
Archaeologists indicate that there are also traces of earlier settlements nearby: from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. Everything seems to indicate that the road follows the former trade route running at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. According to the Regional Conservator of Monuments: - An area of about 1 acre was uncovered and examined, the rest of the site is under an asphalt road and in its close vicinity. (...) Two pillar structures (...) and 3 residential buildings (...) were revealed. Another interesting discovery are fireplaces (25) characteristic for this period and related to the Przeworsk culture cultivated in this area. Below the area with the fireplaces utility cavities of considerable depth are located. Among them, a two-chamber furnace for firing ceramics was found (...). During the research 380 objects were identified.
And how will this affect the implementation of the project itself? - It doesn't change the project. These are so-called rescue researches - they do not consist in preserving this substance, only what is possible will be extracted, secured and analysed - assesses Piotr Miąso, director of the Podkarpackie Regional Road Management. Although the discovery may slightly extend the project implementation, it will certainly contribute to the promotion of this little-known part of Europe.
The objective of the LIP885 project is to support cross-border development processes in the borderland of Poland and Ukraine by improving transport accessibility and condition of road infrastructure. This will be achieved through the modernization of almost 7 km of the regional road No. 885 to the state border, between Przemyśl and Hermanowice. As a result, the project will allow for communication accessibility to the designed Polish-Ukrainian border crossing Malhowice-Nyzhankovychi. The effect of the planned modernization will be the creation of a new road connection between the two countries, an alternative for the existing Przemyśl-Medyka-Lviv connection.
The Lead Beneficiary is the Podkarpackie Regional Road Management (PL), and the partner on the Ukrainian side is the State Administration of the Lviv Oblast. The total budget of the project is 7.5 MEUR (including Programme co-financing of 6.75 MEUR).
