Equipment from the project helped save a life

Category: Programme News

A search and rescue action carried out yesterday (29th June) by the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue – Bieszczady Group using a drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) purchased under the PBU Programme ended successfully. In cooperation with other services, the rescuers were looking for a 65-year-old ailing man who went missing in the area of Cergowa Mountain in the Low Beskids (PL). The action was faster and easier thanks to the drone which took hundreds of aerial photographs, while a special algorithm called SARUAV, developed by the University of Wrocław, unerringly selected the photo on which the missing man could be seen. This was the first successful search for a missing person carried out in Poland using these combined technologies.

Drones were purchased as part of the project "SOS-Rescue – the training center for organizing and operating cross-border rescue actions" implemented, among others, by the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue – Bieszczady Group. A Polish-Ukrainian training center for mountain services, richly equipped with rescue equipment, was established in the Bieszczady Mountains. More information about the project can be found in the “Projects” section.

The action in the Low Beskids shows how necessary the project was. The equipment purchased helped to find the missing person.

Congratulations!
