Castles are a symbol of our past, our historical heritage. This time, we encourage you to visit these buildings, which hide many interesting stories and legends. We invite you to the castles that were the heroes of our projects. Thanks to the Programme various activities like modernization, restoration, equipping and promotion were carried out to improve conditions of these objects and increase their popularity (details to be found in the project pages below each information).

Poland

Krasiczyn Castle

The castle was built between the 16th and the 17th century by Stanisław Krasicki and his son Marcin. After their death, the castle belonged among others, to the Sapieha family, who considerably contributed to the beauty of the park surrounding the castle. The eastern gate leads to the courtyard where nowadays concerts are held during the summer. A special touristic attraction is a recently renovated 17th century chapel. It ranks among such pearls of Polish culture as the King Sigismund's Chapel at Wawel Castle in Cracow.

The tour of the Castle includes:

  • Courtyard;
  • Chapel of the Assumption of Mary in the Divine Tower;
  • crypts in the Divine tower;
  • Prince Sapieha's Hunter's Room;
  • Exhibition rooms in the northern wing.

Palace of the Old Castle – Hrodna State Museum of History and Archaeology

The museum was founded in 1920 and opened for visitors in 1922. In 1924, the city council handed over the Old Castle premises to the museum. Here, on the Castle hill, in the historical centre of Hrodna, the museum Curator U. Jadkowsky found the ruins of stone constructions of the 12th - 17th centuries during archaeological excavations. The New Castle, and then the Craftsmans House — a typical accommodation unit of the second half of the 18th century, were handed over to the museum in 1990.
The exposition occupies 30 halls with more than 8,000 exhibits. The main part of the exposition is located in the Palace of the Old Castle with archaeological, historical and regional nature departments.

Opening hours:

Ukraine

Zhovkva Castle

The castle was built by the architect Paweł Szczęśliwy by order of Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski in 1594-1605. In the second half of the 17th century was the residence of King Jan III Sobieski, where ambassadors and crowned persons from all over Europe came. The castle is the largest building in Zhovkva. Four three-tiered corner flanking towers and four two-story buildings along the perimeter are connected by closed battle galleries. In the back of the courtyard, in front of the entrance gate, there was the main palace with a two-story open gallery. The entrance gate with a four-tiered gate tower is located on the axis of the castle; an embankment dam and a wooden bridge led to it from the town side, running over a defensive moat filled with water. The castle reached its greatest prosperity during the reign of Jan III Sobieski, who in 1674 rebuilt it into a royal residence.

Currently, restoration works are underway in the castle, but there is a museum in some of the castle rooms.

The castle was chosen as the prince’s residence. Lubart’s Castle is one of the few surviving monuments of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania era in Ukraine.
