The area of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the Lviv Oblast is the cradle of the oil industry. It was here that the scientist, pioneer, pharmacist, social activist and inventor - Ignacy Łukasiewicz - lived and worked. He was the first to distil paraffin from oil and use it for lighting. The symbolic date of the birth of the paraffin industry is considered to be 31 July 1853, when kerosene lamps made according to Łukasiewicz's design were lit for the first time in public at the Lychakiv hospital in Lviv. Ignacy Łukasiewicz is considered the creator of the oil and refining industry, but he also has pro-social and pro-development merits - he financially supported the construction of schools, hospitals, churches, roads and bridges.

In order to popularise knowledge of Łukasiewicz's contribution to the development of the oil industry, the project “Oil heritage of Ignacy Łukasiewicz's activity” (acronym Lukasiewicz) was created. It was implemented by the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the Association of self-governments "Euroregion Carpathians - Ukraine". Its description is available here

The mission was aimed at verifying places/facilities related to the activities of Ignacy Łukasiewicz. The places that were verified were selected during the project opening conference organized in March 2020. The course of the inventory mission is available on the websites of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the  Euroregion Carpathians.

One of the effects of the inventory mission was the development and publication of a leaflet promoting oil heritage sites on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

As part of the project, a multimedia guide entitled “In the footsteps of Ignacy Łukasiewicz” was created. By using archival and current photos, the guide contains visual elements that allow you to compare the condition and appearance of the presented places over the years. The guide is available in Polish, English and Ukrainian.

Users of the Telegram application can use the game developed in the project. Players answer questions in an online bot and receive information about important and attractive places in Boryslav (UA). Along the way they can visit, among others: Post Office, Church of St. Anna, Central Park with working oil pumps, Jan Zeh Museum. The game is available in English, Polish and Ukrainian versions. Its aim is to encourage more tourists to visit Boryslav- one of the cities with a great oil heritage.
