In the times of intensified border traffic between Poland and Ukraine, a crucial problem persisting is low border crossings’ capacity causing traffic-jams and long queues on the border. Insufficient openness of the border is seen as a barrier to build sustainable cross-border social, economic, cultural and local-government cooperation.
The issues are going to be tackled by the OpenBorders project partners from Poland and Ukraine, who jointly decided to design and construct the new pedestrian and bike traffic infrastructure at the Polish border crossing point in Hrebenne–Rava Ruska. Within the scope of works the control and clearance building will be constructed, roads and squares will be paved, path lighting and monitoring system will be installed. Additionally, modern equipment for the new crossing point will be purchased: specialist gear, computers (incl. software), x-ray scanners for baggage, radiometric gates, devices for identification of persons and checking the authenticity of documents, passport readers, manual metal detectors. The investments will allow introducing new clearance technology in pedestrian and bike border traffic. Joint conference organised within the project will be an opportunity to exchange experiences and initiate common discussion on the challenges of a new type of traffic.
Now the travellers crossing the state border, residents of nearby areas and the border services using the new infrastructure will all benefit from the OpenBorders project effects. The border clearance procedure will be shortened, people will be able to cross borders more easily and quickly, which is important for lasting "cross-border" social ties. The project partners believe that the new pedestrian and bicycle traffic border crossing in Hrebenne–Rava Ruska, like the one located
in Dołhobyczów, will prove to be an important element for the development of the local community and the border region of Poland and Ukraine.
