It can be surprising, but the area of the Podkarpackie Region in Poland is a place where oil extraction began and was used for purposes known to us today. In the region, i.a. Ignacy Łukasiewicz - inventor of the kerosene lamp, known all over the world - lived and worked. A similar heritage can be found in areas located in the Lviv Oblast in Ukraine. The oil legacy of Łukasiewicz’s activity is an example of the underutilised historical heritage of the cross-border regions, what delays the development of these area on the basis of a missed opportunity.
The LUKASIEWICZ project aims at promoting knowledge about oil heritage. Within its activities a film guide will be created presenting the industrial culture related to the achievements of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, the tradition of oil extraction, as well as the quest (game) will be developed. The new multimedia guide through the places related to life and professional activity (Rzeszów, Jasło, Krosno, Bóbrka, Sanok, Lesko, Ustrzyki Dolne on the Polish side and Sambir and Staryi Sambir, Schidnycia, Borislav, Drohobych, Lviv on the Ukrainian side) will be available on the Internet as e-product. The production would contain visual components allowing for comparison of the condition and appearance of the presented places over time. The film would be broadcast on local television networks and published on the Internet. These promotional tools will be preceded by an inventory mission for the oil heritage of Łukasiewicz to gather photos, film and audio materials. Additionally, Polish-Ukrainian conferences and workshops, as well as study visits, will be organized on both sides of the border.
Stimulating interest and awareness of the heritage among the inhabitants of the regions, decision-makers, and above all people connected with the promotion of tourist destinations will allow for the growth of cross-border tourism. The project will popularize the knowledge about the common oil heritage of Łukasiewicz resulting in an increase of the common awareness of tourists offer of this area and strengthened cooperation in the Polish-Ukrainian border area.
