Local Tourist Organisation in Przemyśl (Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland)
Lviv and Przemyśl are popular tourist destinations attracting a growing number of tourists every year. Thousands of people choose these cities to spend a weekend or a longer holiday walking along the age-old streets, admiring treasures in local museums, enjoying a concert or a theatre play, hanging around at a street festival, savouring coffee in a cosy cafe. Unfortunately, there are people for whom such experience is even hard to imagine. In fact, both cities are not welcoming people with disabilities as most museums and architectural landmarks are not accessible for such visitors. The lack of training and hands-on experience in servicing this category of customers is also an issue.
The project team has decided to change this situation and provide the opportunity for the visually impaired and blind persons, as well as for those who use wheelchairs to explore the unique cultural and architectural heritage of Lviv and Przemyśl. To that end, tourist routes in both cities will be adapted to the needs of persons with disabilities. 55 tour-guides will be trained to work with this particular group of visitors. In the future, such city tours will be available free of charge. Additionally, travel agencies will be encouraged to plan tourist routes in the vicinity of Lviv and Przemyśl with special consideration of the people with special needs. The extensive promotional campaign will help potential visitors to learn about the existing opportunities.
The ACCESSIBLE project will contribute to the touristic offer of the cross-border region, making it truly open for special needs.
TOURIST ROUTES
Thanks to the project, two attractive tourist routes for disabled persons were created in Przemyśl and Lviv. The routes enable exploring the historical and cultural heritage of both cities.
The route in Lviv leads through 8 sites of medieval architectural heritage in the Pidzamche district (medieval churches of the 13th-17th centuries) which are, at least partly, accessible to wheelchair users and low mobility groups. On the other side of the border, in Przemyśl, a route around 5 sites of medieval architectural heritage was created for visually impaired and low mobility groups.
INFASTRUCTURE
In order to improve accessibility on the touristic routes organized in the project, the elevator was installed in front of church museum of Bl. Kliment Sheptytsky in Lviv and a ramp for wheelchairs to access Greek Catholic Cathedral in Przemyśl.

PUBLICATIONS
Based on the tourist routes designated in the project, partners created joint tourist guide around Przemyśl and Lviv.
The guide is intended primarily for people with disabilities (in wheelchairs or visually impaired) and for groups with reduced mobility (people with temporary health problems, pregnant women, the elderly, people with prams). The guide contains information on partially accessible tourist routes (urban and architectural restrictions), characteristics of the roads leading to a specific cultural site, barriers to tourist or daily activity in popular places, special advice for disabled people and people with reduced mobility. It also provides advice on improving the infrastructure in the vicinity of cultural and tourist sites that are visited on a daily basis by the above-mentioned people – residents and tourists.

Additionally, project partners prepared and published bilingual Polish/Ukrainian manual dedicated to professionals - tour guides and translators - to present and promote the local history and culture of Poland and Ukraine, cross border region, including the cities of Przemyśl and Lviv for people with special needs and groups with low mobility.

To spread knowledge and best practices on how to ensure the quality and safe services to people with disabilities while visiting cultural heritage sites, partners organized in Lviv the training seminar for touristic guides.

The aim of memorandum is to ensure the rights of disabled people to access the tourist services and provide adopted infrastructure to visit cultural and historical places for people with special needs in Polish – Ukrainian borderland. Partners plan also to establish the specialized public organization “Cross border association for assessible tourist development and cultural diversity promotion of West Ukraine and East Poland”.
