Communal Enterprise "Palace of the culture in City Lutsk" (Volyn Oblast, Ukraine)
The Kurpish region (partially in Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Poland) and Volyn (Volyn Oblast, Ukraine) are considered to be one of the richest and most interesting regions in Poland and Ukraine regarding their ethnographic character. The Kurpish and Volyn culture have developed their own art and craft traditions. However, without active support and promotion, traditional songs, melodies, dances, and folk instruments, as well as crafted and handmade works of art, have no chance to be saved for future generations. There is a risk, that these professions and skills, which are not popular nowadays, will vanish forever if the young generation doesn't learn about their values.
The PROFolk project will promote knowledge about the Kurpish and Volyn crafts and folklore through common actions related to the cultural and historical heritage of both regions. Certainly, the main attraction for the inhabitants and tourists visiting these regions will be the „Vanishing Professions” Festival in Myszyniec (Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Poland) and in Lutsk (Volyn Oblast, Ukraine). During these events, participants will learn more about the Kurpish and Volyn culture by, inter alia, participating in the ethnographic workshops promoting old, vanishing skills. Moreover, as part of the bilateral exchange, there will be organized dancing, singing, arts, crafts and playing the folk music instruments classes. Songs and melodies typical of the Kurpish and Volyn region, collected during the study visits will be published on a CD which will be available free of charge at schools, libraries and cultural institutions on both sides of the border.
The activities will increase the quality and diversity of touristic products in both regions. The project will also contribute to raising awareness of the great potential of the Kurpish and Volyn folklore. The possibility of getting to know the culture and history of both regions will have a positive impact on their inhabitants. By participating in all these events, the project will help people to integrate. This knowledge and skills, as well as the gained contacts, will facilitate future cooperation and implementation of other cross-border initiatives regarding the cultural and historical heritage of both regions.
