The cultural and historical heritage of the Zakarpattya and Podkarpackie regions is incredibly rich. This is particularly evident in Perechyn (Ukraine) with its Lemko culture and Leżajsk (Poland) with Lasowiacy. These regions have nurtured enduring traditions with significant touristic potential. Unfortunately, they remain relatively unknown on the international and even national stage, especially among young people. The project aimed to enhance the tourist appeal of these areas by promoting the unique cultural heritage of the Lemko and Lasowiacy communities.
One of the project's objectives was to transform the Local Ethnographic Museum in Perechyn into a tourist destination capable of presenting the past in an engaging manner and attracting various categories of visitors. To achieve this, a programme and activity plan were developed and museum personnel trained. Additionally, a new website “Lemkos and Lasowiacy's hеritаgе” was launched. Two сulturаl forums were held - оnе in Ukraine, and аnоthеr in Роlаnd - to widely spread аnd рrоmоtе the historical аnd cultural heritage of the two ethnic grоuрs. Another way for preserving and popularizing local culture involved encouraging children and youth to engage in traditional crafts. Four craft clubs were initiated within the project and continue to operate, including pottery and weaving clubs in Ukraine, and traditional painting and woodcarving clubs in Poland. The photo exhibition, 'About the People, for the People,' provided an opportunity to explore the history of the regions through the stories of local individuals. Old photos (from the 19th and 20th centuries) featuring local people and families, accompanied by text descriptions of their life stories, were displayed in Perechyn and Raduzh.
The local communities of Perechyn and Leżajsk benefited from the project implementation gaining the chance to explore, study, and preserve their culture. Tourists will now have the opportunity to engage in new attractions and gain experiences, while culture and tourism stakeholders can leverage networking opportunities, develop common initiatives, and enhance promotion efforts.
