In the Polish-Ukrainian part of the Carpathians, we can find many valuable plants and animal species, including common nase, a fish from the carp family (lat. Chondrostoma nasus). The spectacular migration of this fish to spawning grounds is often compared to the spawning of salmon in Alaska and is unique on a European scale. Until recently, the fish was a frequent victim of poachers. The protective measures taken by fishery guards practically led to the disappearance of poaching. However, this exceptional animal species still needs protection and its natural spectacle of migration needs to be promoted and turned into a tourist attraction.
The main objective of the FISH project is the joint protection and promotion of a common nase and its migration habit in the neighbouring Sanok Poviat and Zhydachiv Raion. Within the project, four events will be organized on both sides of the Polish-Ukrainian border: two scientific conferences and two trainings combined with rafting. The events will be attended by the institutions and organizations dealing with biology and water protection (fisheries guards, scientific institutions). Its subjects will be related to the protection of fauna and flora, including fish spawning grounds, in particular the common nase. Trips will be organized along the San River in Poland and the Stryi River in Ukraine. The partners will also prepare a popular science publication about the nature of mountain streams and rivers and an over 20-minute film on the migration of the common nase. Both will be presented on the beneficiaries’ websites and social media. All activities will support scientists, naturalists, ecologists, fishing guards, clubs and nature enthusiasts in protecting rivers and its inhabitants.
As a result, both partners will develop new methods of protection and sustainable use of water resources, as well as preventing their over-exploitation. The project will promote water ecotourism products, attract nature lovers and scientists, as well as increase awareness of the inhabitants about the natural values of their regions and enhance them to propose new green initiatives.
