The Carpathian Mountains is a unique area appreciated by all those searching for freedom, inspiration, and recharge of mind and body. Apart from beautiful nature, it is famous for its rich and diverse cultural heritage. Solina in Poland is one of the oldest settlements in the Bieszczady, a well-known tourist destination for the highest located artificial lake in Poland, Solina lake. Kosiv in Ukraine is known as the centre of Hutsul folk arts including woodcarving, pottery, weaving and embroidery, artistic metal treatment and leatherworking. Although cultural heritage is the most important asset of these areas, transformation processes and changes in people’s lifestyle led to the extinction of local traditions and crafts in both countries.
KoSol project partners see tourism as a chance for local development. They are also aware of the challenges such as inefficient cultural heritage management and promotion. The project is going to fill in this gap by developing and publishing a guide “Traditional festivals - best practice toolkit for local communes in Poland and Ukraine" and conducting study tours there. To implement new knowledge and skills, a new tourist product will be created - "Festival of Kosiv Cheese Horses". This cheese product made in the form of a horse, a unique product pertaining to Kosiv, will become a symbol of this key project event. The festival is expected to host a lot of visitors becoming an effective instrument for the promotion of the cultural potential of the region, a platform for exchanging knowledge and experience. Its programme will be devoted to folk crafts, cuisine as well as traditional music and dancing.
The project is going to reveal the economic potential of cultural heritage, local traditional crafts, which is often neglected and underestimated. The developed guide will be a tool that will help to promote the tourism potential through proper planning of cultural events by Polish and Ukrainian communes. The festival will become a regular annual event, which will contribute to the local development and welfare of the communities from both sides of the Polish-Ukrainian border.
