Project description

Traditional crafts and trades, formerly typical of the regions around Hajnowka and Malaryta are rapidly disappearing. Why? Young people do not have sufficient motivation to cultivate the traditions of their ancestors. In ordinary life, they use standard factory products, electrical engineering and do not think about traditional ways of producing goods. Authentic techniques the specificity, and the uniqueness of local territories are almost lost.

The Folk'n'Culture project was designed to carry out activities to preserving and promoting some of the old regional traditions - weaving, straw weaving, and cuisine. Each of the partners is going to focus on the popularization of its specific local crafts and cuisine recipes through active cross-border cultural exchange and entertaining events. So, activities for the revival of weaving will be organised in the commune of Kleszczele, while in the Malaryta area traditional straw weaving will get a new lease of life. During special workshops devoted to passing on the skills of constructing a traditional bread oven, stove fitters together with the participants will build a new bread oven in the open, roofed wooden shelter in Puchły. Once built, it will serve educational activities and culinary workshops aimed at the preserve and convey bread baking skills and specific dishes based on a traditional bread oven. To promote the project idea and improve the tourism image of these regions beneficiaries will organize two public festivals. Festival of Traditional Cuisine in Puchły will be a demonstration of the entire process of preparing the oven for baking bread as well as baking and preparation of several dishes while International ritual folklore festival in Malaryta will become a platform where guests will see various manifestations of the folk culture of Polesie and Podlasie: crafts as weaving, straw weaving, wicker weaving, embroidery, and pottery.

The activities of the beneficiaries aimed at reviving various forms of traditional culture and supported by local authorities and citizens will have a long-term impact. Preparation of new or advanced training of craftsmen, on Belarusian-Polish borderland, will help their creative self-realization, increasing the identity of the region and its tourist attractiveness and showing further development of this area.
