Project description

In the last century, beehives were often placed in the kitchen gardens so that honey bees could pollinate plants. There used to be numerous natural areas in the countryside with a number of wild plant species, while in urban areas parks and gardens were arranged. For insect pollinators like bees, today’s cities and villages with cultivated monocultures, fashionable lawns and ubiquitous concrete and asphalt are not the best places to live. The development of civilization caused a drastic decrease in the number of natural pollinators, including the honey bee.

The creators of the APIS project acknowledge the dangers arising from the decline of pollinators and want to promote new approaches to restore biodiversity and make people (including children and adolescents) aware of the role of pollinating insects in nature. Two Educational, Tourist and Promotional Centers of Carpathian Bee will be established in Nowosielce in Poland and Vyshnya in Ukraine with the purpose to promote the common Polish-Ukrainian natural heritage, including Carpathian bees, and to disseminate knowledge on beekeeping. Two beekeeping workshops addressed to students and enthusiasts will be conducted in both countries. Also, an educational path (approx. 5 km) will be created in Poland (Zarszyn Commune) with natural objects related to bees and beekeeping. Two promotional events – the Ecological picnic (UA) and the Festival "Days of the Carpathian Bee and Honey" (PL) will help promote the natural heritage through educational and entertaining activities. The project implementation and results will be communicated through social media and 6 promotional videos.

The project will strengthen local beekeeping, which is one of the ways to foster regional development using tools based on sustainability and biodiversity. It will also contribute to creating a better environment for animal and plant populations in the cross-border area.
