Lublin (Lubelskie Voivodeship, Poland) as the historic capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Union is a mixture of the five nations’ heritage: Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia and Ukraine. The Union was the most important act of sixteenth-century Europe, which defined the existence of several European nations and marked their development for the next 200 years. Unfortunately, at present there are no sufficient institutions cultivating the multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural structure of this area. It is worth to examine how this act affected the relations of Poles and Ukrainians, and above all, whether it also affected Uzhhorodians (Zakarpatska Oblast, Ukraine) who were then outside the borders of the then Polish-Lithuanian Union.
The 2cultures project will bring answers to these questions. To enhance the knowledge of inhabitants and tourists about the cultural heritage of Lubelskie Voivodeship and Zakarpatska Oblast, centres for the development of common PL-UA culture will be created (in Uzhhorod) and developed (in Lublin). These centres will have a comprehensive cultural offer including folklore, art, literature, painting, theatre, crafts, a special multimedia exhibition and a guide. In these centres, there will also be located information points where guidebooks dedicated to both cities will be available. Once a month, these centres will host meetings with people associated with these cities (historians, chefs, students, academic lecturers). Moreover, young people will prepare special multimedia comics about the history of castles - Lublin and Uzhhorod, in which common points will be present.
Joint work of all project partners will lead to the creation of the Strategy of joint promotion and preservation of cultural and historical heritage and will contribute to increasing the attractiveness of both regions. After completion of the project, the cooperation will be continued by common activities such as: youth exchanges, creative groups cooperation and meetings devoted to common culture and history. Also, the created and developed cultural centres will continue to serve creative youth groups and tourists visiting these regions. Thus, there will be organized exhibitions, lectures and meetings thematically related to the historical and cultural heritage of both regions.
CREATED CULTURAL CENTRES
The project partners established two cultural centres to strengthen cultural links across the Polish-Ukrainian border and to popularise the richness and diversity of the border area.
Both cultural centres are embassies of sorts - Uzhhorod in Lublin and Lublin in Uzhhorod.
In the centres, for 5 days a week, meetings of creative youth groups interested in Ukrainian-Polish history and culture take place. They present multimedia exhibitions showing the life of the cities and the tourist and cultural offer.
CULTURAL EVENTS
Youth - amateur actors under the direction of producer Rudolf Dzurynets, created a play based on the writing "A Fairy Tale About a Dog That Broke Out of the Chain" by Polish playwright Piotr Rowicki. Teenagers aged 12 to 16 take part in the performance.
Play - "A Fairy Tale About a Dog That Broke Out of the Chain"
Within the framework of the project, 4 interactive videoconferences were held to present the cultural and historical heritage of Lublin and Uzhhorod. They were held simultaneously in the Cultural Centre in Lublin and the Uzhhorod Cultural Centre, which were connected by multimedia devices purchased within the framework of the project. The conferences were attended by lecturers and students from universities in Uzhhorod and the Lublin voivodeship. They were devoted to the following topics:
In Uzhhorod and Lublin, the project partners organised meetings with local authorities, scientists of various fields, artists and young people. During the meetings, work began on developing lists of tourist resources and on classifying the cultural and historical heritage of the two regions. This work served to identify the tourist destinations that might be most interesting for Polish and Ukrainian tourists.
PUBLICATIONS
Lublin and Zakarpattya. What do these seemingly remote regions have in common? The answers to these questions can be found in the publications presented below:
Young people prepared a comic strip about the history of the castles of Lublin and Uzhhorod.
"Two cultures, one Europe... tours of the monuments of Lublin and Zakarpattya" (PL version)
"Two cultures, one Europe... tours of the monuments of Lublin and Zakarpattya" (UA version)
"Two cultures, one Europe. A guide to tourist attractions of the Lublin and Zakarpattya regions"
The project partners developed a "Strategy of joint promotion and preservation of cultural and historical heritage of Zakarpattya Oblast of Ukraine and Lublin Voivodeship of Poland for 2020-2025".
The strategy indicates long-term directions for the development of the Lubelskie Voivodeship and Zakarpattya Oblast border region in terms of preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Lubelskie Voivodeship and Zakarpattya Oblast.
The strategy was submitted, among others, to the Regional State Administartion of Transcarpathian Region for inclusion in the Programme for Development of Tourism and Spas of the Zakarpattya Region 2021-2025 and the Programme for Development of Culture and Arts in Zakarpattya 2021-2025.
