“Hominum animalumque saluti” (To the welfare of people and animals) says the bas-relief on the facade of Stepan Gzhytskyi National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies Lviv National where the majority of veterinary doctors of both Ukrainian and Polish origin used to study and where important research works were conducted. This can be a slogan of the centuries-long history of veterinary medicine on Polish-Ukrainian cross-border land. Today, this history is present only in the archives.
VetHeritage project team want to make this history living, bring it into the spotlight by a series of activities aimed at the preservation of historical documents through digitalization and publication and at the wide promotion of this history. More than 3500 documents will be digitalized and made available online; the findings will be published in professional journals. The project team is certain that veterinary heritage can be a tourist attraction and is planning to create the touristic route, which will include landmarks in Lviv, related to veterinary medicine. For the same purpose, the “veterinary weekends” will be organized in Lublin, Rzeszów, and Lviv, which will include a scientific picnic, mobile exhibition, art performance, promotion of the new tourist routes. These events will be open not only to scientists and students but also to a general audience. Within these events, historical veterinary corners, created within the project, will be opened in Regional Veterinary Chambers of Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships. In the corners, digitized materials will be displayed, which in the future will be supplemented with new information. The historical corners will serve to commemorate the historical heritage of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland in the veterinary field.
Cross-border cooperation will enable the exchange of experience, strengthening contacts between veterinary doctors in Ukraine and Poland, the joint creation of new tourism products related to the Polish-Ukrainian historical and educational heritage, which will attract a large range of recipients from Poland and Ukraine. Activities in cross-border cooperation will strengthen the partnership and emphasize its long-term nature.
