On October 23-25, 2019 our Programme in cooperation with Uzhhorod National University organized an International Scientific Conference "Security of the area covered by the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine".
The pursuit of security is one of the basic and most vital needs of every person. Security, in particular, is an important challenge for border regions. The peripheral territories of the Ukrainian-Polish-Belarusian border are characterized by the low quality of life of their residents in several aspects ranging from poor material living conditions and low access to the labour market, through the insufficient provision of social infrastructure to the limited access to the health care system. Moreover, these areas are not free from natural and man-made hazards, so there is an urgent need to create effective systems for emergencies prevention and response. All these problems cannot be solved at a national level as infectious diseases, natural disasters, pollution and crime know no borders. Thematic Objective Security within our Programme addresses these challenges. Through the implementation of joint projects, the Programme provides better access to the health care system, development of social services, prevention of natural disasters, environmental threats as well as an effective response to hazards.
During the two days of the Conference, scholars from three countries analyzed security issues in various aspects. The presentations of the speakers focused on the cross-border security in five security areas: physical and technical, social, health, economic and ecological one. The practical dimension of the discussion was the experience of the projects implemented under PBU Programme in the current (2014 - 2020) and previous (2007-2013) periods. Among the speakers there were the representatives of Uzhhorod National University, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Warsaw University, Pedagogical University of Cracow, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Cardinal Wyszyński University in Warsaw, University of Rzeszów and Grodno Yanka Kupala State University.
